Fry Bread and Betty Tags?

Waikiki is having it's first real POW WOW this weekend - at Kapiolani Park. Really. It is being billed as a cross cultural affair, so there will be hula AND hoop dancing AND... BETTY TAGS!

Last month we drove through AZ, from Prescott to the Grand Canyon, then past Tuba City and up to Lake Powell - the entire time I was looking for Fry Bread and couldn't find any anywhere...what's with that? Zoikes - my mouth is watering just thinking about the F** bread word. My taste buds came home sooo disappointed.

Now look - The Universe did not let me down! There will be Fry bread on this very island. (Please, please, please, Universe...let it be the real thing! )

I will be there selling BETTY TAGS. I hope that they put me next to a F** bread stand. I also hope that I don't have to cook the books because I have spent all the sales money on the aforementioned delectable item.

Hmmmm.....maybe I shouldn't have signed up for this POW WOW afterall?

Nana i ke kumu

I heard a good one yesterday. This guy who just got back from a couple of years in the Phillipines told me this story...

A few months ago, after an activity which included a lot of FUN and a lot of FOOD (YAY!) there were leftovers. I guess he looked too skinny, so the people in charge decided to give him the leftover food. He took it home and ate and ate but then there was still so much left over and he started feeling like a glutton, so he thought about a family he knew that he could take the rest of the leftovers to.

He packaged everything up in foil and walked to their house. He knocked on the door and one of the kids opened the door and then closed it really fast and yelled out for his mom and dad. His parents came to the door.

The guy who had the food handed it to the parents who passed it to one of the kids, who lifted off the foil and yelled "SPAGHETTI"!!!!!! The guy looked at the parents who had tears running down their faces. He asked "what's wrong"? The dad said that they didn't have any food and he did the only thing he could think of to do - he got the family down on their knees and had one of the kids pray. That smart little kid prayed for SPAGHETTI !

It was just a little while later that he knocked on the door.

Good one huh? Hmmmm...I think I'll go pray.

Secret Keyholes and Fanciful Twists

Okay...it is tomorrow and I promised. Well, I drank from Alice's cup and found a way to escape through the keyhole! It comes by way of a Miss Vanessa at http://afancifultwist.typepad.com/ I only started reading this blog a few months ago, but noticed how she is always going to her mailbox and getting packages! Is that every girl's dream or what? But how does she do it? Then I figured out that she is "swapping" with her readers!!! Well, I wanted to play, so yesterday's photo was what I sent to her.
Now I have a reason to check my mailbox everyday!
I am going to get a package from Miss Vanessa!

NEW COLORS!!

I actually started taking notes at the studio yesterday because I've finally learned that it just IS NOT COOL to get colors that I really like out of the fire and then not even remember what they are called.
From now on I promise to keep a record so that I can try to repeat the really cool ones.
Here's what I got today. Do you like them?

Whoops!

Well, I really am GREEN at this. I thought I was scheduled for the ARTFEST this coming Saturday and Sunday (6/16-17) at Kapiolani Park just like I TOLD everyone I was. I'm sure that thousands of people were planning on meeting me there to buy BETTY TAGS (Sorry guys ;)
Just got a call from Marilyn with the ArtFest committee, explaining to me that I didn't get my $$$$ sent in on time so I can't participate this weekend. Well, shucks. I tried to sweet talk her, but I guess my sweet talking has gotten kind of rusty cuz it just wasn't working.
NO SHOW this weekend for Betty Tags. That means that the rest of June is a wash. I did hear that there was going to be a POW WOW in the park at the end of the month. Maybe I'll look into that.

Taiko Drums and Pau Riders

It's the season of celebration in Hawaii Nei! On Friday night it started with the Pan Pacific Festival and Waikiki block party on Kalakaua Avenue. It was my first time doing this fair, so I probably got there a little too early to set up. (It started at 7pm and I was there at 2:30 - do you think I was a little bit too anxious?).

It was fun watching the minah birds and tourists while I waited in the parking lot compliments of the US Postal Service. Maybe free parking in Waikiki is why the rates went up on stamps? I was asked to be there at least by 4 and then the police didn't close the street until 5:30 and set up took until almost 7. I'd make a rotten Bedoin.
I was a campfire girl because the uniforms were to die for... but maybe I should have joined the Girl Scouts instead.
The street festival was filled with delicious smells, loud noises (I was next to the Taiko Drummers on one side and a guy selling local music CD's on the other) and some very nice people.

April felt like a celebrity with Japanese Tourists wanting to take their photos with her. I explained to her that it was because she was so pretty and she said "NOT!" She is such a big help at these fairs and is quite the little sales lady/model.
